Overview

On 4 February 2025, a beach clean-up was organized at Akkaraipattu Beach to mark the 77th Independence Day of Sri Lanka. The activity brought together youth groups, sports clubs, walkers, and community members under a shared message of environmental responsibility.

Why This Mattered

Public spaces often reflect everyday habits. Beaches, in particular, are vulnerable to plastic pollution, which affects both marine life and community well-being. By organizing a clean-up on Independence Day, the initiative linked national pride with environmental responsibility and encouraged citizens to take ownership of shared spaces.

What We Did

  • Organized a coordinated beach clean-up drive
  • Engaged youth members and partner groups in collection efforts
  • Collected 19 kilograms of plastic bottles from the shoreline
  • Sent collected plastic waste for recycling
  • Provided cleaning tools and collection bags
  • Managed transport and minor logistics for waste handling

Immediate Impact

  • Removed 19 kg of plastic waste from the beach
  • Improved cleanliness and safety of the shoreline
  • Engaged community members in hands-on environmental action

Long-term Value

  • Promoted ongoing environmental awareness among youth
  • Encouraged recycling and responsible waste dispo

Financial & Material Transparency

Cleaning tools and collection bags were used for the activity. Minor logistics and transportation costs were managed to ensure collected waste was properly handled and sent for recycling.

The 77th Independence Day Beach Clean-Up demonstrated how community participation can turn awareness into action. By working together to restore a public space, the initiative reinforced a culture of responsibility and sustainable practice within Akkaraipattu.
