Overview

Akkaraipattu Beach is a shared space for the community, visitors, and those who depend on the sea for their livelihood. This one-day initiative focused on restoring the cleanliness of the الساحil while bringing together volunteers and local stakeholders to take collective responsibility for the coastal environment. With support from local authorities and community members, the activity created a practical space for youth to engage directly in environmental care.

Why This Mattered

Coastal pollution affects not just the appearance of the beach but also marine life, fishing activities, and public health. Over time, unmanaged waste can damage ecosystems and reduce the usability of shared spaces. This initiative addressed both the visible waste problem and the need for stronger environmental awareness within the community.

What We Did

  • Organized a coordinated beach cleaning effort with youth volunteers
  • Collected and disposed of waste using gloves, bags, and cleaning tools
  • Worked alongside municipal representatives for proper waste handling
  • Provided safety items such as masks and first aid support during the activity
  • Arranged refreshments and water to support volunteers on-site
  • Managed transport and coordination to ensure smooth execution

Immediate Impact

  • Noticeable improvement in beach cleanliness within a single day
  • Safer and more usable space for visitors and local residents
  • Increased awareness among volunteers and community members
  • Active participation from youth in environmental action

Long-term Value

  • Encourages consistent care for coastal areas among local communities
  • Builds environmental responsibility, especially among young people
  • Supports protection of marine ecosystems and fishing livelihoods
  • Contributes to reduced pollution over time through awareness

Financial & Material Transparency

Total funds raised: LKR 5,240 Total expenditure: LKR 5,240 Funds were allocated for essential cleaning materials, safety items, volunteer support, transportation, refreshments, and coordination-related expenses.

This initiative brought together different parts of the community with a shared purpose. It highlighted how small, coordinated actions can contribute to preserving public spaces and strengthening environmental responsibility for the future.
